Sales and Marketing Tactics | A-

This reviewer found no complaints regarding UMSI’s sales and marketing techniques. Nondisclosure of fees is sometimes an issue, but the overall the company does not employ deceptive sales, advertising or marketing strategies. Still, you will want to read any contracts thoroughly before signing with the company. It is also a good idea to ask your sales contact for business references within your industry.

Contract Terms | C-

Nowhere on the company’s website does it list processing fees or contract terms. Rather, a very vague disclaimer is found on the FAQ page stating:

“Because each of our customers has unique needs, our processing services are customized according to the specifics of their business. Pricing is based on factors such as type of industry, method in which payments are accepted, card types accepted and a number of other variables.”

While the ability to customize services can be advantageous to a variety of businesses, UMSI’s lack of transparency makes it hard to compare them with other merchant service providers. The above grade is a reflection of their failure to readily disclose fees.

BBB Report |A-

Despite the fact that UMSI is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, they still have a fairly impressive rating. There have not been many complaints filed for a national business that has been operating for nearly 20 years. Only 18 complaints are listed, the majority of which (13) have to do with billing and collection issues. The remaining five complaints are because of problems with UMSI products and services. Most of the complaints have been fully resolved by the company.

Bottom Line

United Merchant Services appears to have a solid reputation when it comes to sales and service. They offer extended hours to accommodate their customers in various time zones, with a call center open 7 days a week from 9 A.M. until 3 A.M. When customers do become unsatisfied, UMSI seems to make a genuine effort to remedy the situation.
